Hungry?
Posted in Katie on 08/07/2007 02:57 pm by debbie_kaI can’t tell how much Katie is eating when I breastfeed but when we feed her from a bottle she has been downing 4 ounces of milk. I was wondering if we should move her up to 5 ounces but the rolls in her arms and legs tells me that she is definitely getting enough to eat.
I figured we’d wait until next week’s doctor appointment to see if we should be feeding her more. But in the meantime, I looked up online to see what people say. I found out there is a calculation you can do. You multiply your baby’s weight times 2.5 ounces. So since Katie is 12 lbs, I multiply it by 2.5 ounces to get 30 ounces. Then I divide it by 6 (the number of feedings in a 24 hour period) and I get 5 ounces. That’s how much she should be eating at each feeding.
So last night we did an experiment. For her last feeding of the night at 9pm, I filled a bottle with 4.75 ounces of milk with one teaspoon of rice cereal. She drank it so fast! I secretly hoped it would help her sleep through the night. She did wake up at 2am but only cried a little and fell back asleep. The next time we heard her cry was at 4am! Not bad. We’ll try again tonight and hopefully she’ll stop waking up at 2am.
