Strawberry Picking

March 30th, 2008

Thanks to Yuewen for inviting us to go Strawberry picking.  It was a beautiful day and we had a great time!  I didn’t even know something like this existed in Irvine (http://tanakafarms.homestead.com/Strawberry_Tours.html).  It was a bit more expensive than we thought ($13 for adults) but it is definitely worth checking out.  I think Uncle Joel tried to sell his freshly picked strawberries to get some of his money back.  :)

The tour started at 11am.  A tractor pulled our wagon-thingy while our tour guide talked about the history of the farm and we stopped to eat different kinds of veggies (carrots, onions, celery, etc).  The tour ended with some strawberry picking and Katie loved it.

Easter Basketball

March 25th, 2008

We had a very busy weekend but the highlight was that Katie attended her first Laker game.  They lost to the Warriors but Daddy was very happy.  Katie wore a Lakers onesie (gift from one of pish’s patients) and a Warriors warm up jacket (from Aunty Ishya and uncle Billy).   She loved looking at all the people at the game and even clapped when everyone was cheering.  She got a little restless at the end but lucky I had the Baby Bjorn carrier.  Having her in that most of the time made it much easier.

Earlier in the day (and the day before) we celebated Easter.  Katie liked her easter eggs but got lazy when I tried to set up an egg hunt for her.  I think she had more fun watching mommy clean up all the eggs.  She also had lots of fun playing with Aunty Debbie and Aunty Jos.  They came all the way down just to see her.  Special thanks to Aunty Tisha for the cute dress!

Yo baby

March 20th, 2008

Katie has been eating more table food now and I’ve been in search of healthy snacks for her.  I’ve seen a couple friends feeding their kids yogurt so I bought these YoBaby yogurts.  Katie loves them!  After about of week of feeding it to her as a snack, I read the label and it said it had whole milk in it!  ahh….I’m not supposed to feed cow’s milk to Katie until she is 1 yr old.  oops.  I guess I should read the labels first.  The product name has baby in it so it should be for babies right?  Lucky she’s almost 1 yr old.  Plus we haven’t seen any side affects (not sure what is supposed to happen if we give her cow’s milk early anyways).

However, I checked the YoBaby’s website and found this :  “The perfect first yogurt, for babies six months and older.”  So I guess it is ok.  phew!  I almost had another “bad mommy” incident.  :)

Gripe Water

March 18th, 2008

Katie’s teeth are coming out fast.  The bottom two are out and a top one is breaking through the gum.  This has caused her to be a bit fussy lately.  We have tried giving her stuff to bite on but she’s still impatient.  Well….my cousin introduced us to gripe water.  He grew up on it in Hong Kong and swears by it.  We tried giving it to Katie this week and it seems to be helping.  She likes the taste of it and sometimes wants more.  We’ll keep using it this week and see how it goes.

Woodwards Gripe Water

From Wikipedia:
Gripe water is a home remedy for babies withcolic, gas, teething pain, reflux or other stomach ailments. Its ingredients vary, and may include alcohol, bicarbonate, ginger, dill, fennel and chamomile. It is typically given to the infant with a dropper in liquid form; a single dose may be 2.5 to 10 ml, depending on the age of the baby, repeated several times daily. Adults may also take gripe water for soothing intestinal pains, gas or other stomach ailments.

Gripe water is recommended by some pediatricians and alternative practitioners as a natural treatment option. It is available in the US as an over-the-counter FDA regulated medicine as well as in various dietary supplement forms. Although many parents report positive results using gripe water no formal clinical studies have confirmed its efficacy.Various remedies to fix minor upset stomachs in babies have been around for centuries in different cultures, but the first “gripe water” was formulated in England in 1851 and used by English nannies. The original Woodward’s Gripe Water contained 3.6% alcohol, dill oil, sodium bicarbonate, sugar and water.

In 1993, the FDA ordered an automatic detention of all shipments of Woodward’s into the U.S. on the basis of it being an unapproved drug. Woodward’s has since been marketed online as a supplement although a 2000 review in the Journal of Royal Society of Medicine found that most of the ingredients in Woodward’s gripe water are of questionable value in relieving infantile discomfort, and that getting a fussy baby to stop crying may be no more complicated than giving it some sweet-tasting liquid.
