Tantrum!

Katie had a MAJOR meltdown at school this morning.  Pish dropped her off in my car (usually it’s his car).  So she got to watch videos on the way to school.  When they got there, she refused to get out of the car.  After Pish dragged her out, she was jumping up and down and screaming in the parking lot.  She wanted to go back in the car to watch.  Pish finally got her into the school but she was still screaming and refused to go into the classroom.  She usually goes into the daycare classroom to eat her breakfast before school starts.

Pish said this was the worst tantrum ever.  She has never done anything like this before.  I think she’s growing up and is testing us to see how far she can get.  The hardest part for Pish is that it was embarrassing.

We found this quote online:
Well, yes, it can be embarrassing and even humiliating for you as the parent, but only if you CHOOSE it to be. Say what? Yes, you heard me, only if you choose to be embarrassed. “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” – Eleanor Roosevelt. And likewise, no one can make you embarrassed or humiliated without your permission. So don’t let them.

You decide that teaching your child socially acceptable behavior in a positive and supporting manner is MUCH more important than the stares of a people with nothing better to do.

Summary:
• Your child (and you!) are more important than what others around you think
• No one can make you feel ANYTHING without your permission, so don’t let them
• Be Consistent (the number one tip for every parent!)
• Reinforce the behavior you want the child to have – not the bad behavior. (Don’t give in even once!)

I called Katie’s school an hour later to check on her.  The front admin said she took Katie on a walk to another classroom and she calmed down. Then after a few minutes Katie said, “Miss Gail…I’m ready to go eat my breakfast now.”

He already told me that’s the reason why they didn’t get the dvd player. I don’t think it was the dvd itself though. She is just becoming more independent and already wants to make all her own decisions. How long is this going to last???
