Big Sister Book

BIG thanks to Auntie Christine and Catelyn who gave Katie a new book.  She LOVES it!!  Each page is like a scrapbook for her to enter text or pictures.  It is a new project for her and she already started working on some of the pages.

Cover page:  Not sure why she picked a picture where she is not smiling but she picked it!

Page #1:  Katie wrote her name with very little guidance from Pish.

Page #2:  On this page we decided to let her write by herself.  We told her to write a 2 but she drew a rectangle and started to color it in.  So I wrote a 2 on a piece of paper and then she wrote it here in the book by herself.  Next we asked her favorite color and she said blue.  Again, I wrote it on a piece of paper for her to look at it and she wrote it in the book.  Favorite food was Mac N Cheese.  Favorite Song was ABC.  Favorite toy was Hello Kitty.

Big Girl class

Katie started her first week in the big kid’s class.  The new teacher said she had no problems adjusting to the new classroom or to the new kids.  Katie is eager to do the new work and often likes to work with other kids.  They seem a bit stricter in this room though.  The school is already sugar free and peanut free but now the teacher is encouraging us NOT to put juice boxes in her lunch (even though it is already 100% juice).  The prefer milk or water because if the kids get juice, they finish the whole drink and then don’t finish their lunch.  maybe they are just thirsty???

Last week, her toddler class teachers were very sad to see Katie go.  I was surprised at how much they were affected by kids leaving their room and made us promise to visit them.  They also made this for Katie as a good bye gift.  The blue and pink dots are Katie’s finger prints.

Auntie Emily

Katie had LOTS of fun playing with Auntie Emily this past weekend.  I feel bad I forgot to take picures though.  We should set up another playdate!

Here’s a conversation I had with Katie after Emily left:

Me:  Auntie Emily says you have a lot of energy.  Do you know what that means?
Katie:  Yeah.  Means I talk a lot
:)

A few catch up pics

I’m behind on posting again.  I’ve been pretty tired after work and I’ve been trying to be on the computer less at home to help my carpal tunnel.  I have no more pain so I think the less computer time is working.

I stil have a lot of pics on my camera I need to download but here are a couple from my phone.

seaWorld

Katie had a day off school for President’s day so we headed down to San Diego to spend some time with her cousins.  We ended up going to Sea World (since we all had annual passes).  Lucky there were not Shamu attacks that day!

ChineseNewYear

I volunteered to help at a Chinese new year party at Katie’s school last week.  They read stories, learned about traditional clothing, and everyone received a red envelope with stickers inside.  They also had chinese snack time with dumplings, rice balls and tangerines.  The kids had lots of fun but Katie got sad when I had to leave.  She just kept saying, “I want to go home with you!!”  She was screaming when I left but the teacher said she didn’t cry for long.  She was perfectly fine when I picked her up in the afternoon.

Staying regular

A few weeks ago, Katie was hanging out with Catelyn and wanted to eat the same snack Catelyn was eating.  They were Quaker Oats Oatmeal squares.  Christine said they are great for keeping Catelyn “regular”.

Ever since Katie was a baby, it is common that she does not poop every day.  We were worried at first but it seems normal for her.  Out of a seven day week, she will poop 5-6 of the days.  We used to give her prune baby food and that usually worked.  But now that she’s older, we’ve just accepted it.

Since Katie seemed to like Catelyn’s snack, I bought our own box and the first two days Katie ate it, she pooped twice each day.  It really does work!  Thanks Christine.  ;)

Happy Chinese New Year!

Growing up

For a while now, we have been trying to get Katie to take a shower instead of a bath but she never wanted to.  Then randomly a few weeks ago, I asked if she wanted to take a shower with me and she said yes!  Showers use way less water and the whole process is so much faster.  Now, if I tell Katie it is time to take a bath, she says, “No mommy, baths are for babies.  I’m a big girl.  I want to take a shower.”

********************************************

Katie has always been a pretty obiedent kid.  When we moved her from the crib to a twin bed, I  would tuck her in, say good night and tell her not to get out of bed until the morning.  I guess that really stuck because in the mornings, she won’t get out of bed until we go into her room.  The usual routine is (between 5-6am) she yells, “PEE PEE! PEE PEE!”  Then we go to her room, she gets out of bed, pees in the bathroom and then we tuck her back in bed because it is not 6 yet.  Then she just lays there and watches the clock (sometimes she’ll fall back asleep).  Then at 6am, she yells, “dada!! It’s 6!”.  Again, she doesn’t get out of bed until we go in there.  Well, I’ve been telling her everyday that if she has to pee, she can just go the bathroom by herself but she never does….until this morning!  At 5:40am, I heard her jump off her bed and then I saw her bathroom light turn on.  She pee-ed and then yelled for me to wipe because she couldn’t reach the toilet paper.  Pee-ing by herself was a start!  Now we have to work on reaching the toilet paper in that bathroom.  Hopefully after she masters this, Pish and I will get 10-30 minutes more sleep each morning.

I love that she’s growing up and becoming more independent.

Katie Quote

Katie:  Mommy, when the baby comes out can I share all my toys with her?

me:  Of course, that is very nice of you.  Do you think the baby is a girl or a boy?

Katie:  Girl!  I want to share my hair clips with her too

:)

Movin up!

Every parent thinks/wants their kid to be genius.  We are so biased!  Well, ever since I visited Katie Montessori classroom, I always felt the work they were doing was too easy for her.  Basic puzzles, sorting colors and shapes, etc.  So at our last parent/teacher conference, I asked the teacher if Katie could be moved up the the primary class where they do more in depth work.  She informed me that they didn’t have room plus they usually don’t move kids up until they turn the age of 3.

Katie doesn’t turn 3 until April so that means this school year would be almost over anyways.  Oh well…we’d have to wait until next school year.  Then yesterday we had a surprise!  The teacher came up to me and told me that she thought Katie was ready to move up to the Primary class and they wanted to do it immediately.  Not sure what the big rush is (they probably just needed Katie’s spot in the toddler class) but we aren’t complaining.  Katie will get to learn more and will interact with the older kids.

The only change is that the Primary class is 5 days a week (currently she only goes 3 days).  I think she’ll transition fine but she won’t get Mondays with my parents anymore and Pish will be golfing a lot on fridays now.  Don’t worry mom/dad! We’ll still be coming over for dinners like we did last night. ;)

Snow Day!

We took Katie to the snow on saturday and she LOVED it!  We went up to Mt. High with Jack, Christine and Catelyn.  Pish was able to find a spot off the side of the road for some good sledding.  The girls had lots of fun sledding, playing and making a snow man.  Thanks to Sherri for letting us borrow her sled.  Too bad Jack’s cement mixing tub didn’t hold up.

Here are the girls singing on the drive up.
